Solar energy is experiencing strong growth in Finland, and companies in particular have begun to harness its potential in increasingly diverse ways. Oomi Solar experts Antti Korkala and Matias Ristimella explain what solar farms are, what kind of use they are suitable for and why they will become increasingly important in the future.

A solar park is a large, ground-mounted solar power plant that generates electricity that is fed directly into the grid. It is not a property-specific system; solar farms can serve multiple users without individual companies having to make their own investments.

“A solar farm differs from a traditional property-specific solar power plant in that the electricity produced is not used directly by the building, but is instead sold to the grid or directly to customers, for example through a PPA,” says Project Manager Matias Ristimella

Electricity without investment – a concrete step towards sustainability

Electricity generated by a solar farm can also be utilised without the company having to invest in its own solar power plant. This can be done through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), in which the company commits to purchasing a certain amount of renewable electricity over a long period of time.

“In this case, Oomi Solar owns the power plant and is responsible for its operation, and the company benefits from clean electricity without any investment or maintenance costs,” says Business Director Antti Korkala

The PPA offers many benefits to the company, including a reduced carbon footprint and stable electricity prices for several years ahead. This provides security, especially in situations where the market price of electricity fluctuates significantly.

At the same time, the solar farm offers a concrete opportunity to advance sustainability goals. While the exact carbon footprint should always be assessed on a case-by-case basis, solar electricity is always cleaner than electricity purchased from the grid.

“It is important to understand that a solar farm is not just a technological solution, but a concrete action to increase renewable energy in society,” says Ristimella.

What makes for a good solar farm?

Typically, solar farms are located in areas that cannot be used for other purposes, such as low-yield fields. For landowners or companies with unused land, a solar farm can be both an environmentally friendly and economically viable solution.

Setting up a solar farm requires a suitable plot of land, proximity to the electricity grid and reasonable rent. The investment threshold for large farms can be high, so sometimes a smaller farm of some 10–15 hectares is a more agile and efficient option.

A solar farm is a flexible and responsible way to generate clean electricity without investing in your own power plant. If your company is considering renewable energy, Oomi Solar can help you plan and implement the right solution for your needs.

“Our task is to assess the suitability of the area and the accessibility of the electricity grid and to create a hassle-free, profitable package for the customer,” Korkala summarises.
