Oomi Solar Oy will supply a 5 MW / 10 MWh BESS to OK Sähkövarasto Oy, a joint venture between Oulun Seudun Sähkö and Haukiputaan Sähköosuuskunta.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to be built in the Kello area of Haukipudas will support the efficient use of renewable energy production and improve the flexibility of the energy system by balancing the fluctuations between electricity production and consumption. The BESS will also strengthen regional grid reliability and capacity management.

The Kello BESS project is progressing according to design

The BESS project in Kello has progressed smoothly from the design phase to construction. The BESS is strategically located at a key point in the electricity network, in the immediate vicinity of the substation. The location was chosen for its good accessibility and technical conditions.

For OK Sähkövarasto Oy, it is important that investments in sustainable energy infrastructure are long-lasting and reliable, and that they enable the efficient development of the electricity grid.

“The cooperation with Oomi Solar has met our expectations very well. The design and construction efforts of the project have progressed systematically at a high level of quality and according to the agreed schedule. This confirms our confidence that the BESS investment will meet the set targets,” says Tommi Kantola, CEO of Oulun Seudun Sähkö.

The designing and permitting of the project started at the end of 2025. Construction began at the end of February 2026 with infrastructural works, and the equipment will be installed in April. The commissioning of the BESS is planned for June 2026, with the system expected to be fully operational during the summer of 2026.
